Better gasoline mileage and power with a standard transmission?
Probabilities are you have operated a automobile with an automatic transmission, but did you realize that you can actually get increased fuel economy and performance with a manual tranny? While an automatic tranny and standard transmission may achieve the same task (shifting gears) they achieve it in totally dissimilar manners, and the gas mileage can probably be just as different.
To start out with to understand why this is, you need to comprehend a little about how the auto tranny works. The task of any rig transmission is to keep an engine in a given operating range at all times, and translate the rpms from the engine in to forward acceleration. While the final resolution is almost identical between an auto and manual transmission, they do it in very distinct manners, and there are a few main reasons why a manual tranny will ordinarily get better miles than an automatic.
First, The key to the modern-day auto tranny is the torque converter. It takes the position of a clutch in a standard transmission. Torque converters use a technology known as “hydraulic coupling”. This can be likened to placing one fan in front of some other then turning one on and noticing the breeze from it turn the blades of the other fan. Given it is more efficient than this scenario, but you can see how there would always be more slippage in an auto transmission. Even in transmissions with advanced technology that try to lock-up the torque converter there'll still be a little of this same slippage under acceleration, they just don’t have the problem at constant highway speeds. Basically an auto transmission’s input shaft is not directly coupled to the engine at all, it’s coupled through a torque converter.
A manual tranny, however uses a clutch plate that directly connects the motor and tranny. When you take your foot off the clutch pedal, springs push the pressure plate against the clutch disc, which in turn presses against the flywheel. This locks the engine to the tranny input shaft, causing them to spin at the same speeds.
Secondly, automatic trannies are much more complex than standard trannies, they have alot more parts than a manual transmission. All these components add mass, rotating mass. Rotating weight has a much more significant impact on power loss than stationary weight.
Nonetheless, a standard tranny is alot less complicated. The standard tranny doesn’t depend on the great number of additional components that an automatic transmission depends on to shift. It alternatively depends on the operator to do the shifting for it. You can see how this can make it alot less complex.
Last, the state-of-the-art automatic tranny is orchestrated to offer as smooth of shift as achievable to the driver. Basically they are designed to make the shift transparently. They detect rather the operator is on the throttle or accelerating at a normal rate, and they correct automatically to make the shifting and motor rpm’s more aggressive.
Nonetheless, with a standard transmission, you get the capability to select when to shift, and can do what’s called “short shifting". This is a technique that allows you to shift well before your rpms get too high, and keep your motor in its optimal rpm range and gasoline economy range at all times.
