Heater Coolant Bypass
1993 ford escort heater core?
I'm loosing coolant and the windows are fogged so I know what I've got. I've read posts on this and realize its a time consuming job. I have no garage and its cold up here in the north.
Can't I sever the hoses and fit them together, bypassing the heater core? I don't mind sacrificing getting warm inside, just want to run the car. Can you foresee any drawbacks?
I'm not familiar with the Escort specifically. But Ford's in general have the heater core hoses accessible under the hood against the Passenger Side Firewall. (Assuming it is mounted under dash inside the front of the passenger).
By Passing a leaking heater core is not a big deal once you locate the hoses. There should be two. One takes in the Anti-Freeze and the other goes out. Make sure the engine is cold (Pressurized when hot for the cooling system) before you disconnect the hoses. Remove both hoses from the heater core (or cut loose if needed). Then take the two ends and use a male to male coupling and hose clamps to fasten the ends together. If you have enough hose, you can just loop one hose back to the source connections on the motor or radiator without cutting them.
Have fun changing the heater core. Find a skinny kid you can fit under the dash upside down to reach it.
