Engine MAP Sensor voltage and diaphragm testing
The map sensor detects intake manifold pressure and sends the info the the ECM. The ECM calculates the air intake quantity and controls fuel amounts. The sensor consists of a diaphram piezo resistive resistance the PRR measured on the diaphram the diaphram is deflected based on air intake pressure when resistance changes output voltage changes. The MAP signal is sent to the ECM to calculate intake air amount and it can be checked by the current scan tool data if there is a problem with the data or you have a trouble code stored check the MAP circuit sensor, wiring, and ECM measure the voltage at each terminal. Check the signal wire depending on engine condition also check the reference voltage and ground circuit. Match the data you read to the specifications found in your repair manual. A faulty MAP sensor can lead to excessive fuel consumption and engine surging. Most are located in the intake manifold not all however usually held on by two small bolts. To test the sensor you will need to backprobe the electrical connector. Using a pin enter the connector from the rear and locate the signal wire, this is the wire that feeds signal data back to the computer you will need a vauccm diagram to identify it using a voltmeter place the red lead on the signal wire and the other black lead to ground, you should see approx 5v with the key on, meanwhile place a vacuum pump on the vacuum line fitting on the sensor and apply vacuum.While applying vacuum observve the voltage reading, for every five inches of vacuum pumped you should see a 1v drop.Apply 10 inches of vacuum and you should see 3v drop in voltage, apply 15 inches and you should see 2v, keep the vacuum pump applied and observe the voltage for any leaks if it holds steady voltage, the sensor is good.
